Why Make The Organic Choice?

I believe in eating whole foods. I also believe that following a regulated – healthy diet filled with fresh fruits & vegetables, following the guidelines of the food pyramid and eating little to no processed foods will lead me to a strong & healthy body.

Organic foods have been the recent trend in shopping the past few years and there is a lot of speculation on whether or not it’s worth it. I sought out some answers on the net and this is what I’ve found:

On BreastCancer.org :

Marisa Weiss,, M.D., president and founder: The word “organic” can mean so many different things. When I shop for organic foods, what I am looking for is foods free of preservatives, hormones, pesticides, and other additives.

Ronda Gates, M.S., R.Ph.: The word “organic” doesn’t guarantee anything, because the industry is poorly regulated. If you buy organic, be sure to look for the words “certified organic” to insure there is no fraud. That’s the only regulation that guarantees that the foods are grown without pesticides, antibiotics, or any other medications that are added to the feed…. Read More…

On Environmental Working Group (www.ewg.com)

People eat organic foods for better health, environmental concerns and
because they taste better. Eating organic foods will reduce your exposure to
pesticides, herbicides and fungicides. These chemicals have been linked with
an increased cancer risk, Parkinson’s disease, infertility problems, hormone
imbalances and growth and mental impairment in children. Some foods have
much higher pesticide residues than others and should be eliminated or
restricted. Read More…

On OrganicConsumers.org:

Additionally, organic food production bans the use of artificial food additives such as hydrogenated fats, phosphoric acid, aspartame and monosodium glutamate, which have been linked to health problems as diverse as heart disease, osteoporosis, migraines and hyperactivity [1]. Furthermore, while plants extract a wide range of minerals from the soil, artificial fertilisers replace only a few principal minerals. There is a clear long-term decline in the trace mineral content of fruit and vegetables, and the influence of farming practices needs to be investigated more thoroughly.

The Soil Association review [1] found that on average, organic food has higher vitamin C, higher mineral levels and higher phytonutrients plant compounds that can fight cancer (see later) than conventional food. Conventional produce also tends to contain more water than organic produce, which contains more dry matter (on average, 20% more) for a given total weight [1]. Thus, the higher cost of fresh organic produce is partly offset by purchasers of conventional produce paying for the extra weight of water and getting only 83% of the nutrients, on average, available in organic produce. The higher water content also tends to dilute nutrient content.

On ConsumerSavvyTips.org:

Free From Chemicals and Pesticides

One of the most attractive qualities of organic food is that it’s grown without the use of chemicals and/or pesticides. This means that you won’t have to worry about the long-term effects of ingesting pesticide residues. Your food will be clean and natural, just the way it should be.

Organic Food Is More Nutritious

In addition to being chemical and pesticide-free, organic food is more nutritious. Due to the way organic farmers farm their land, the soil is more nutrient dense and the organic food that grows on it is packed with the nutrients found in the soil. So by consuming organic food, not only are you losing the harmful effects of chemicals and pesticides, but you’ll be gaining the benefits of naturally-added nutrients.

President Gordon B. Hinckley

“This is my prayer for all of us—’Lord, increase our faith.’ Increase our faith to bridge the chasms of uncertainty and doubt. . . . Grant us faith to look beyond the problems of the moment to the miracles of the future. . . . Give us faith to do what is right and let the consequence follow.”

Gandhi

“A man is but the product of his thoughts what he thinks, he becomes.

Seriously – What If I AM Happy?

I was referred by a friend to check out this popular satire blog that makes fun of happy LDS Newlyweds. I will not link to her from my blog because I try my best to not promote negative energy-related – anything.

So what if people are happy? LET THEM be happy, why add to the already- negative – enough – energy going on in the world?

Aren’t we as LDS women/men counseled to promote peace? Sure it’s “fun” satire, but WHY? I’m sure I would hear from this blogger:

“Oh! Come on, it’s all done in “fun” humor, why take it so seriously?”

Ummm… I’m sorry, but I do take life seriously as it was given to me as a Gift and not to come across as ‘better’ or ‘holier’ than you – which I honestly am not – but what happened to truly and honestly LOVING your neighbor and treating others as you would want to be treated? I do have love for her, and she has every right to her opinion – as do I and that is why I’m sharing it.

Sorry to be the ‘party pooper’ but I think what you’re blogging about and how you’re blogging about it is rude and distasteful.

*** You may not know who I’m talking about- but trust me (in my opinion) you’re better off not knowing. It’s just sad that she’s getting so much attention for doing a rude (in my opinion) thing.

  • If you know who I’m talking about – what’s your opinion and take on her blog?
  • For those of you who don’t, if you came across a blog that made fun of happy LDS newlyweds – do you think it’s worth putting out into the world – such mockery?

This is filed under ‘Soap Box’ because I am so sad by how people let contention control them so easily. She obviously is irritated by how ‘Happy’ and maybe ‘naive’ these newlyweds are… but why judge them? People could say that maybe I’m judging her as well… …. huh… maybe I am. I’m sorry for that.

How do we separate judgment from observation? I am certainly not going to make an entire blog about how I disagree with her blog… but maybe this observational post will help me learn to not put my foot in my mouth when I come across someone I disagree with. :)

What's Real

All through my adolescent years and even to this day I go in and out of reality & what’s real. I hardly ever see my body as ‘Good Enough’ and the stresses of life don’t help my emotional stability out well at all. I truly feel that right there is what holds back my progress in ‘letting it all go’ psychologically and physically. I can only keep trying – right?

I really admire the Dove team for promoting ‘real women’ in their campaigns. It’s about time somebody took a stand in encouraging women to love their bodies vs. starving their bodies.

It’s important to always pursue bettering your body and keeping it at its peak health – but it’s not always easy, especially women like myself who successfully pursued an unrealistic body and now is reaping the consequences.

There is ALWAYS time to change…

Currently I am motivating myself to love who I am today. To feed myself positive reinforcing thoughts & complimenting myself regularly. I need to remind myself that I could be worse off and I should be thankful for the body I have NOW.

I am also motivating myself to keep as active as possible & fully 110% focused on eating well. Baby-steps, but baby-steps are better than no steps (or walking backwards) ;) .

Thank you Dove for helping me and other girls like myself :)

Never Forget

As the resurrected Savior said to the Nephites, so He might say to us today:

“Blessed are ye because of your faith. And now behold, my joy is full.

“And when he had said these words, he wept, and the multitude bare record of it, and he took their little children, one by one, and blessed them, and prayed unto the Father for them” (3 Ne. 17:20–21; emphasis added).

God sent His Son to die for our sins – how do we go about each day to thank Him for that sacrifice?

We can start by never forgetting Him and what He did for us.

Stones

The clouds shade the earth
when the sun has too much to say,
the ocean water visits the sand,
filling the spaces where stones have
ran away.

Wind and rain steal the trees’
innocent leaves,
but winter snow consoles their branches.

Parched with thirst
in the middle of an ocean:
A fish without a home,
a bird without wings,
a boat without a lighthouse,
a night without stars,
a rose without thorns…

A fish can’t live
without water to breathe,
just like a bird can’t fly away
without wings.
A boat has no direction
without a lighthouse
to guide it safely home
just like the night needs stars
to lead it back to heaven-
a rose needs thorns
to protect its beauty…

Hands were given to us
to reach out,
mouths were given to us
to ask for help,
feet were given to us
to walk forward,
eyes were given to us
to cry in humility,
a head was given to us
to bow down to our Father…

Mother Nature finds beauty in everything,
God creates it
and brings it back home.

Patching Up The Rough Spots

“I don’t want to make the same mistakes my parents made…”

My heart physically hurts when there are disagreements. I’m not perfect, he’s not perfect – but we both have the potential to become more perfected as long as we don’t give up when times get rough.

I am the happiest when there is peace throughout the day. I have grown up knowing that I am FAR more sensitive than others around me and that can be both a weakness & a strength. I get in a self-hate mode after disagreements, because I cannot hold grudges (they kill me) but I also can’t go against what I feel deep down I know is right, which means I can be VERY stubborn – because I cannot lie in how I feel. It hurts because I don’t like standing in the way of others and causing a situation where I feel alone. It’s also hard to follow the philosophy that, “Truth Needs No Defense” when you’re speaking with someone who does not agree or does not see the situation/concept the same way you do.

What do I do when times get rough?

I think to myself, What would Jesus have me do?

and I LOVE without restraint. Am I perfect at it? No, sometimes I’m not quick enough to remember and I go for HOURS just stewing inside or being WAY down in the dumps.

It’s very interesting to oversee from the outside looking in (after the ‘disagreement’ has past) how Satan takes advantage of weaknesses and mirages little things to make them appear HUGE. Satan wants you to get angry, he wants you to not be open minded, he wants you to ‘lay back and worry about things later’, he wants you to focus on ONE thing that’s important and not see the big picture, he wants you to NOT hear others out and consider their point of view… he REALLY does not want you to consider what Jesus would have you do.

Well, that’s what I’m going to do. Sorry Satan, but you’ll NEVER have me. ;)

Here are some good articles to get you in the right mood and help you be strong in the midst of a storm:
